Cartoons, freaky monsters, and just plain weird creatures. This is what Low Brow Art IS. Low brow art is completely filled with weird and bizarre creatures. Lines so clean, and colors so bright, and vivid, they’re so incredibly eye catching. In the art community there are many different types of art, but low brow art is most definitely the most interesting form of art in my opinion. From graffiti artists, to popular art magazines, and types of low brow art, this is an art movement, which we all live in, either you know this or not.
To even explain what low brow art is, you must understand where it came from. It’s founded by Robert Williams, who claimed to have started and named this art movement. He sent a comic book feel out in his works. This is one type of low brow art. The “Comic Book” style. With this comic book style, low brow art movement began. Artists began to realize that this “Cartoonist” and “Comic Book” style could sell. Graffiti artists began to catch on. Most graffiti artists never felt belonged into the “high class” art. They felt that this movement could give them a place in the true art scene. They began painting their works on canvas, and proving to people that they had true skill. Artists collectors started to grab onto their works, and began selling them. Those Art collectors began to realize how well these “low brow” works started to sell. Pretty much, low brow artists were the stuff to see, and people caught on to them. Artists became inspired, and started to create these “big eyed creatures”. And these plastic toy creatures. It’s pretty much the weirdest thing ever. This cartoon-tainted abstract surrealism definitely impacted young artists, and the style became very popular.
There have been a few low brow artists that have stuck out. Like said before, Robert Williams was the first artists to title the art movement. He is very well known for his work, but mostly because he created “Juxtapoz” magazine. His work is featured in the magazine constantly. He is kind of the founder of the “comic book style.”
